Kval- • from: old Norse hvalr (=whale). Often used in combination with våg (inlet; e.g. Kvalvåg, Kvalvågen, Kvalvågan), vik (cove, bay; e.g. Kvalvik, Kvalvika), or vær (old Norse ver, fishing or hunting spot near the sea; e.g Kvalvær, Kvalværet). Usually a name for a place or a body of water where whales were killed.
